NHS take-home pay calculator

Choose your band and pay step — or enter any salary — and we'll break down income tax, National Insurance, NHS Pension and student loan for 2026/27 or 2025/26.

How this calculator works

Pension contributions are worked out first using the NHS Pension tier for your pay (5.2%–12.5%) and deducted before tax under the net pay arrangement. Income tax then applies to the remainder above the £12,570 personal allowance at 20%, 40% and 45%. National Insurance (8% between £12,570 and £50,270, 2% above) and student loan repayments are calculated on gross pay.

Figures assume a standard 1257L tax code, full-time hours and England tax rates. They exclude unsocial hours enhancements, High Cost Area Supplement, overtime and salary sacrifice schemes, so treat results as a close estimate rather than a payslip.
